How to Heal Your Inner Child: A 7-Day Guide

Short notes and a practice you can actually do. Read it in five minutes. Use it for a week.

Inner child work means paying attention to the younger part of you that learned rules to stay safe — and is still running them. Inner child healing isn't insight. It's attention in the body, in small doses, often. Here's what it is, the 10-minute check-in I use, and a seven-day plan to start today.

Dr. Bob Beare teaching inner child work practices

The short version

  • Your younger self learned rules to stay safe. Those rules still run you.
  • When the reaction is bigger than the event, a younger part is driving.
  • Insight does not heal it. Attention in the body does.
  • Do it in small doses, often. Not one heroic session.

The practice: 10-minute check-in

Sitting down, no interruptions. Use it whenever you get hooked.

  1. 1LandFeet on the floor. Three breaths, exhale longer than the inhale.
  2. 2LocateWhere does the feeling sit? Throat, chest, belly, jaw. Rest your attention there.
  3. 3Ask how oldHow old do I feel right now? Take the first answer.
  4. 4Ask what was neededWhat did that part need then and not get? Listen. Do not argue with it.
  5. 5Offer it nowInwardly: I see you. I am here. You are not alone with this.
  6. 6CloseOne breath. Name three things you can see. Come all the way back.

The 7-day plan

Ten to fifteen minutes a day. Same time each day if you can.

DayDo thisThen write
1Breathe 5 minutes. Nothing else.Where does my body hold tension?
2Full check-in above.How old did I feel?
3List your survival rules.Don't need too much. Be good. Achieve.
4Check-in on one trigger from this week. What was the reaction really about?
5Write a short letter to that younger part. What I most need you to know is…
6Write back as that part.What I needed was…
7Check-in, then rest. What changed, even slightly?

Journal prompts

  • What did I have to be in my family to be okay?
  • What was I never allowed to feel out loud?
  • Whose disappointment still shuts me down?
  • What would I say to a kid in the situation I was in?
  • What am I still waiting for someone else to give me?

Signs a younger part is running things

  • Overreacting to small things
  • Same painful relationship pattern, new person
  • Can't say no; collapse when someone is disappointed
  • Numbing with food, work, screens, alcohol
  • Have to be the strong one, and you're worn out

Guardrails

  • Nothing happens the first few times? Normal. Keep going.
  • Too much comes up? Stop, ground, name what's in the room.
  • If it stays intense, do it with a therapist or coach — not alone.
  • This isn't about blaming your parents. It's about finishing something.

Questions people ask

What is inner child work?

Paying attention to the younger part of you that learned rules to stay safe — and is still running them. When the reaction is bigger than the event, that part is driving.

How do you heal your inner child?

In small doses, often. Not one heroic session. Land in your body, locate the feeling, ask how old you feel, ask that part what it needed and did not get, and offer it now: I see you. I am here. You are not alone with this.

How long does inner child healing take?

There's no finish line, but seven days of ten to fifteen minutes is enough to feel something shift. Nothing happening the first few times is normal. Keep going.

Can you do inner child work on your own?

Yes, and solo practice steadies you. But parts that formed in relationship heal in relationship, so guided work moves the deeper material. If it stays intense, do it with a therapist or coach — not alone.

Is this about blaming my parents?

No. This isn't about blaming your parents. It's about finishing something.
